Today we had a very full day of sightseeing in Beijing. First we went to Tian’an men Square. It is the largest urban square in the world and it can accommodate one million people for holding a grand gathering. Then we walked through the Forbidden City, which they began building in 1406 and took 14 years to build. Monarchs of the Ming and Qing dynasties handled state affairs and lived there. The two main colors were red and gold. After lunch at a tourist buffet, we went to the silk factory and learned how silk is made and then how they make comforters out of it. Next we went to the coolest area of Beijing….where the commoners lived. The area was called the Hutong. We rode in rickshaws and got to go visit with a local lady and take a tour through her house. We hit Starbucks twice today! We needed a frappucino after a hot, muggy day….kind of brought back memories of Alabama!!!! After we got back to the hotel, we went to a local restaurant with the family in our group that is from Conifer and we had a nice visit….
